Half Moon flights - where your trip starts
Most arrivals in Jamaica are at Donald Sangster International Airport , 3km east of the center of Montego Bay. Those booked into resorts at Negril or Ocho Rios and its satellite, Runaway Bay, also use the Mo Bay airport as a point of entry into Jamaica. In winter, the busy season for tourism in Jamaica, lines move smoothly. Things move more slowly during the summer months, despite dwindling numbers of tourists -- partly because many Jamaicans from Canada and the United States arrive during those months to visit family. They often bring suitcases packed with gifts and supplies; inspection of these items can cause endless delays. (Jamaica's Customs and Immigration officers are zealous.) Some of the major resorts keep vans waiting at the airport to carry guests right to the hotel for free. Other properties do not, however, especially the less expensive ones. If you're staying at one of these, you must take a taxi (unless you're picking up a rental car at the airport); there is no public bus service from the airport into Montego Bay. Planning a custom vacation isn't limited to choosing where to stay and what to do; you can also plan how to arrive at your destination. Luckily, getting to Jamaica is relatively easy. As one of the largest and most popular Caribbean islands, it has plenty of travel options, from airports, airlines, cruises, and ports for entry. Jamaica's many visitors are enticed to its shores by this ease of entry as well as its famous beaches and resorts. Visitors can fly into either of Jamaica's two major international airports. From there, they can travel on by plane to any number of smaller airports across the island, and arrange for transfers to their hotel or resort from any airport. The most popular way to reach Jamaica, usually said to be because of the speed and convenience, is via airplane. Jamaica is a regional hub, and has direct service from many countries. A flight from New York to Montego Bay or Kingston takes approximately four hours, while flights from London and Paris take roughly seven hours. There are two international airports on Jamaica: Donald Sangster in Montego Bay and Norman Manley in Kingston. The most popular flights are from New York and Miami. Remember to reconfirm all flights no later than 72 hours before departure. Flying time from Miami is 1 1/4 hours; from Los Angeles, 5 1/2 hours; from Atlanta, 2 1/2 hours; from Dallas, 3 hours; from Chicago and New York, 3 1/2 hours; and from Toronto, 4 hours.
